If you want to get pregnant, watch your gums

Today, many couples use the summer and vacation periods to achieve pregnancy. The days of rest in the chosen summer place are especially suitable to relax, promote union, release tension and increase the frequency of sexual relations to achieve the desired pregnancy. Although stress is one of the main factors that prevents pregnancy, it is not the only one.

Recently, a study conducted in Australia has just revealed that gingivitis, a periodontal disease that affects the gums, is a risk factor that can increase a woman's conception time. Therefore, if you want to be pregnant, go to the dentist and check the health of your gums, as gingivitis can delay the chances of getting pregnant. And it is that wearing a beautiful smile is not only a synonym of happiness and but also of health. This novel study suggests that the negative influence that gingivitis has on fertility is similar in magnitude to that of obesity.

But what is this disease and how can we detect it? Periodontal disease is a chronic and infectious pathology caused by normal bacteria that exist in the mouth and which, if not controlled, are capable of inflaming the gums around the tooth and the supporting tissues. It begins by pushing the teeth and creating spaces (periodontal pockets) that end up becoming infected. Inflammation generates a cascade of tissue destruction, which can pass into the circulation.

Periodontal disease has been associated with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, respiratory and kidney diseases, and some pregnancy problems, such as miscarriages and premature births. About 10 percent of the population suffers from some type of serious periodontal disease. However, the good news is that regular tooth brushing and flossing are the best way to prevent them, and the dentist can treat this condition in four sessions.

Taking more than 12 months to get pregnant is an indicator that fertility is impaired. For this reason, experts assure that, in addition to stress and periodontal disease, there are other negative influences that can alter a woman's conception time, such as being over 35 years of age, being obese or overweight, and being a smoker.

Therefore, if you and your partner want to be parents, before embarking on the adventure, go to the doctor to check your health. The preconception consultation is increasingly important to prevent future health problems during pregnancy and to ensure the well-being of the mother and her baby during pregnancy. With some routine check-ups, your gynecologist can confirm your good health to be a mother whenever you want.
